Fitch Ratings upgraded its rating for Verizon Wireless from A to A+. According to an article about the ratings, "Verizon Wireless continues to take market share from the other nationwide operators through its strong brand, quality network and extensive distribution network," Fitch added. "Consumer experience research firm Vocal Laboratories reported Verizon Wireless received the highest customer service quality rating in a recent survey comparing the quality of customer service of AT&T Wireless Services Inc., Cingular Wireless L.L.C., Sprint PCS and Verizon Wireless," according to an article in RCR Wireless News by Dan Meyer. The Boston Globe, July 8, 2003

Following the launch of Verizon Wireless' picture messaging service, The Boston Globe reported: "Verizon (Wireless') offering...includes a considerably simpler pricing plan than many of its rival offers." Yankee Group wireless industry analyst John Jackson is quoted saying that given that Verizon Wireless dwarfs other competitors, the service launch "is a catalyzing event...We're very bullish on the prospects for picture messaging."

Verizon Wireless' Express Network received a "Best Buy" rating of five stars, the highest rating possible, in Laptop Magazine's Cellular Network Showdown. In a head to head competition of the largest wireless carriers' high-speed data networks, the Express Network beat out AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Laptop reports: "The fast service and affordable unlimited data transfer plan make (the Verizon Wireless) network and the Sierra 555 (Aircard) the best in this roundup."

High Marks

The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners praised Verizon Wireless CEO Denny Strigl's announcement that the company would adopt easy procedures to allow customers to keep their wireless phone numbers when "porting" their numbers as they change wireless service providers. November 24, 2003 is the start date for the wireless local number portability compliance set by the Federal Communications Commission. "We give Verizon Wireless high marks for breaking ranks and moving forward on implementing this deadline with no further delay," wrote Bob Nelson of Michigan, chair of the organization's telecommunications committee. He added: "The question naturally arises, if they can and are willing to do it, why can't the other major carriers do the same."

"Lowenstein's Lens on Wireless," a newsletter by wireless industry analyst Mark Lowenstein, compares the national wireless carriers on a number of issues. Lowenstein declares Verizon Wireless is the leader in customer care. The newsletter also notes that Verizon Wireless is one of the carriers that are "a league above the other carriers" in consumer applications.

He stated that the Express Network "is faster than 2G and the GPRS services," and that the T720 is "one of the top 2.5G phones available today." In addition, Lowenstein gave positive reviews of Get It Now applications and SMS, saying it is "very fast, transmitting messages nearly instantaneously." He also praises Verizon Wireless' customer service, rating it "above the industry average."
